Comic-Con 2026's Cosplay Line-Up: What It Tells Wig Buyers for Halloween and Beyond

2026-08-01 10:00:00

San Diego Comic-Con 2026 closed on July 26 after four days that packed the convention center and the Gaslamp Quarter with one of the densest cosplay fields the show has produced. Organizers expected more than 135,000 attendees, and city officials put the event's regional economic impact above $160 million. For the wig trade, the useful signal is not the attendance figure. It is the show floor itself: thousands of finished character looks, photographed from every angle, that preview what retail customers will ask for between now and Halloween.

The short read for buyers. Screen characters dominated Comic-Con 2026 cosplay, led by Rumi from KPop Demon Hunters and her signature purple braid, with Wicked, The Legend of Zelda, Marvel, and long-running anime titles close behind. Nearly every one of those looks depends on a wig to work. Buyers planning Halloween and Q4 stock should read this year's floor as a demand list: character-accurate color, fiber that tolerates restyling, and caps built for a full day of wear.

The 2030 venue agreement, announced by San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria on July 22, matters beyond one weekend. It locks in the anchor event of the global convention calendar for at least four more years, which gives costume and wig demand a stable, predictable peak every July.

The Looks That Drew the Cameras

Photographers from WWD, Variety, and Getty Images documented the floor across all four days. The character mix shows where fan attention, and wig demand, currently sits:

  • KPop Demon Hunters. Rumi appeared repeatedly, defined by a long purple braid. The Netflix film's characters were already among the top Halloween costumes of 2025, and the 2026 floor confirms the demand carried over.
  • Wicked. Elphaba and Glinda pairs were a recurring sight, which means black witch waves and soft blonde curls keep selling two years into the film franchise.
  • Gaming and anime staples. Zelda, Dark Magician Girl from Yu-Gi-Oh!, Ralsei from Deltarune, Princess Peach, and a Zootopia tiger dancer all showed up, alongside Adventure Time and Dungeons & Dragons looks.
  • Horror and comics. Pennywise, Beetlejuice and Lydia, Scarlet Witch, Sylvie from Loki, and Harley Quinn in her pink-and-blue split color filled out the classic convention range.

One pattern stands out in the photos: the costume carries the body, but the wig carries the recognition. A Rumi look without the purple braid, or a Harley without the split color, reads as incomplete. That is why wigs sit at the center of cosplay spending rather than at its edge.

Why This Matters for the Wig Trade

The convention scene is a growth channel, not a niche. Cosplay wigs are the fastest-growing product segment of the synthetic wig market, according to Deep Market Insights' regional analysis. The broader cosplay costume market reached about $3.16 billion in 2026 and is projected to keep growing near 9% a year through 2035, per Business Research Insights. Comic-Con also works as a forecasting tool. Characters that dominate the July floor tend to dominate Halloween retail three months later, which compresses the buying window for anyone supplying cosplay wigs or seasonal costume lines.

What Buyers Should Take From It

  • Color accuracy sells first. Character shades drive the purchase: Rumi purple, Harley's pink-blue split, Glinda blonde, Beetlejuice green. A wide, repeatable shade range, like a manufacturer's colored wig catalog, matters more than any single style.
  • Heat-resistant fiber widens the audience. Cosplayers trim, curl, and spike their wigs. Fiber rated for low-heat styling turns one base style into several characters.
  • Cap construction decides reviews. A convention day runs eight hours or more. Secure fit, breathable caps, and a clean hairline are what buyers mention when they reorder.
  • Timing is short. Halloween orders land in August and September. Retailers finalizing seasonal stock now should treat the Comic-Con character list as their SKU shortlist.

Raysman tracks convention-season demand each year and samples character-color styles in three days on flame-retardant, OEKO-TEX-certified synthetic fiber, so buyers can still add Comic-Con-driven shades to a Halloween run before the window closes.
